Basic Has Never Tasted So Good: A PSL Love Story

In some places, the weather signals fall’s arrival. Where I live, it’s the stores and menus that announce the change of seasons. Personally, I look forward to the smell of cinnamon, nutmeg, and all those cozy autumn spices, and I eagerly await the first day when it’s cool enough to pull out the heavy knits. I live for cozy — and cozy, dare I say, looks good on me.

To officially mark the passage into fall, I turn to one of my most celebrated — and yes, maybe basic — traditions: the once-a-year Pumpkin Spice Latte.

This is a sacred ritual for me because I only allow myself one per season. That’s right, one. I am disciplined. It’s a treat to be savored, not slurped down while inching through rush hour traffic. I have conditions: the weather must be a little cool, and I need unhurried time to enjoy it. I realize that sounds a little high-maintenance, but I take my PSL consumption very seriously.

A few years ago, someone pointed out that my treasured PSL had become part of the “basic” vernacular — shorthand for the supposedly bland and predictable habits of women who love fall, wear UGG boots, and listen to Taylor Swift. I didn’t quite fit that stereotype, but I caught myself wondering: why can’t I just enjoy my PSL without being rage-baited into proving I’m anything but basic? Why can’t women simply like what they like?

Are men called basic when they obsess over beard oil, craft beer, or fantasy football lineups? When they hit the gym and talk about supersets? Why do women get labeled “basic,” while men just get to be “bros”?

Because honestly, what’s not to like about a PSL? It’s warm, comforting, topped with cinnamon and whipped cream. The pumpkin flavor is subtle but satisfying. It’s pure, seasonal joy in a cup.

So this week, when the timing felt right, I ordered my grande PSL and took it outside. The sun was beginning to dip, I took my first sip, and I did something that’s somewhat rare for me these days. I smiled. For those 25 minutes, I was perfectly at peace — and I realized: being basic has never tasted so good.
